Forest School Trips

Forest School is based on a very successful Scandinavian education model, which was brought to the UK in the mid 1990’s It is a woodland based outside classroom which gives children the opportunity to learn outdoors and explore the natural environment as well as enhancing their self esteem and independence.

The children also increase their self-awareness and become aware of risks, learning to manage these safely under the guidance of qualified forest school leaders. The children are encouraged to use their own initiative and use co-operative working to solve problems. The aim of forest school is also to develop in the children a positive mental attitude, intrinsic motivation and empathy in addition to confidence and improved social communication skills.

The idea is that Forest School complements the learning undertaken inside the classroom by offering the children experiences for learning in a rich and natural environment, using natural resources. Some children learn best when they are outside and in forest school environments, they positively flourish. Each child’s learning takes place at their own pace; nothing is forced.

At Freshfields Nursery, Forest School is set up on two sites: one within the acres of grounds at the Clifford Forge House site, and the other is off-site at Moreton Morrell. The 3-5 year old children make the regular trips over to Moreton Morrell, whilst the younger children enjoy their introduction to forest school at the on-site designated space.

Freshfields has positively embraced the Forest School philosophy to provide the children with a rich and rewarding learning environment, both inside and out.
